SEARCH FOR GIRL

Police Expand Operations (N.Z. Prtss Association) WELLINGTON. Oct. 3. Police have almost exhausted their search areas of the Wellington district and are expanding their operations to the quest for Wendy Catherine Mayes to as far north as Paekakariki and Paraparaumu. Small parties cleared an area a chain wide on either side of the Paekakariki Hill road from Paekakariki to Pauatahanui today. The Hutt river banks from Pomare bridge to Silverstream were also thoroughly searched. An area a chain wide into the hillsides of the Ngaio gorge from the Hutt road to the Ngauranga gorge intersection was also covered. Parties searched the Onslow road gullies and many smaller drains in the area. The original contingent of detective and uniformbranch constables is still engaged on the main searches. They have been advised by the search organisers.' Inspector W. A. McGuire and Sergeant E. Russell, that they will be required for search duties during the week-end. I A section of the Rongatai foreshore and the Mana coast around Karehana bay to Plimmerton were thoroughly searched today. McKays crossing on the Hutt road and a small section of the Miramar district were also searched by parties. At 8.30 a.m. tomorrow a party will search the parks and gullies from Wadestown road to Thorndon quay in all accessible areas. A second party will search the Wainuiomata road for a chain on either side from the township to the coast.

A full-scale search will again be undertaken next week-end. The police will seek the co-operation of the public again.

Mr Craigie Returns To Auckland (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct 3. The police officer to charge of the search for Wendy Catherine Mayes, Detective Chief Inspector W. S. Craigie, flew borne to Auckland late yesterday. Mr Craigie arrived to Wellington to take charge of the case from Chief Detective Sergeant W. A. McDougall on the afternoon of September 21. Miss Mayes went missing on September 18. Mr Craigie, who until recently was attached to the Auckland Criminal Investigation Branch, will replace Mr W. R. Feu as chief of the Wellington CJ.B. Mr Craigie will return to Wellington later this week.
