30 KILLED ON ROADS
September’s Toll (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 3. I Thirty persons died on the roads during September.! This takes the toll for thej first nine months of this year to 290. “I am appalled at the need- , less wastage of human life and the grief, pain and suf- J ferlng caused through road accidents, especially as these tragedies have become virtually a daily occurrence,” the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) said today. ‘‘Were it possible to assemble in one place the 1 victims, killed and injured C as a result of motor acci- a dents this year, together with i the wreckage of the vehicles r involved, it would present such a stark and horrifying a sight that the whole country 1 would be aroused. t
“Based on the experience of previous years, this October could very well bring further suffering and misery,” Mr McAlpine warned. He said two bad features, dangerous speed and an upsurge in single vehicle accidents, such as cars running off the road, over a bank, or striking power poles, had been revealed in an analysis taken over several years of road accidents in October.
