Parliament’s Diary
Parliament spent most of yesterday’s sitting in the consideration of legislation. The House stood briefly as a mark of respect to the memory of Mr A. J. Davey, who represented Waimate in Parliament from 1955 to 1957. The Timaru Harbour Board Loan Bill and the Kaituna River District Amendment Bill were read a first time. The Mental Health Amendment Bill was given a second reading.
The measures giving full university status to colleges of the University of New Zealand were debated as one bill, but the debate was adjourned during the evening. At 8 p.m. the Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) introduced the second reading debate on the Crimes Bill. The speakers included:

The House rose at midnight until 2.30 p.m. today.
