HARRIERS Sack-Look Favoured By Women Runners

The sack-look was the most favoured of fashions displayed by the many attractive models on Saturday at Ham—the venue of the annual match between the University women’s hostels and the men’s steeplechase events organised by the University Cross-Country Running Club. When the competitors lined up for the rpatch between Bishop Julius and Connon Hall Hostels it almost looked as if Longfellow had been prescribed as one of the authors for this year's English studies at the university, for the style of dress was closely akin to that favoured by Minnehaha.

Genuine sack-cloth was preferred to substitute materials, and there must have been some puzzled assistants at one city grocery store on the Friday, when asked to meet an unprecedented demand for sugar bags. With the bags selling at the modest price of 6d. it could be, after Saturday’s demonstration, that the genuine sack-look may become more popular with impecunious university students.

Individual Designs A major problem met by the girls in completing their ensemble was obtaining feathers for their coiffure. The rather drab plainness of the sack-cloth uniforms were brightened by the individual artistry of the models, who in addition to competing under their official numbers, completed the Red Indian theme by dawbing their outfits with such legends as “Running Beer" and "Running In-Jin.”

The “Bath Mat” trophy for the inter-hostel match was won by Bishop Julius for the second successive year. The winner is the first hostel to have its tenth runner home and Bishop Julius, with its last girl to count, home in sixteenth place, was well clear of Connon Hall, whose tenth member was twenty-third. The individual winner was Miss J. Alborn (Bishop Julius), who covered the course of little more than a mile'through the Ham grounds in 6min 37sec, to take third fastest time. The contest for fastest time was close, with only inches separating two back markers, Misses J. Fancourt (Connon Hall) and R. Cox (Bishop Julius). In view of the closeness of tlais match the organisers decided to award trophies to both Misses Fancourt and Cox. whose times were Bmin 33sec. Hazards for Men The men’s steeplechase of three miles and a half was fraught with unexpected difficulties and some hazards not encountered In previous events had to be overcome by the com-, petitors in their two laps. There is also a suspicion that one of the leading handicap men was speeded on his way by the assistance of e motor-cycle. As no official protest was lodged, however, the places were allowed to stand.

A large contingent of students from Rolleston House were late entrants in the race. Their presence constituted an unnatural hazard, as two groups of the boarders from the house took up station at strategic points to way-lay the other competitors. On one section of narrow track the less robust of the runners were tossed in to the stream bordering the track, and at a deep water jump the competitors had to overcome some burly opposition, posted on the far bank, before regaining firm footing. The winner of the handicap section Was G. Holdsworth with a net time of 22min 39sec. Fastest time was gained by M. Millar with I9min Msec. almost two minutes slower than that recorded by D. M. Taylor last year, but no doubt partly because ot the additional difficulties met on this occasion. Others may have lost all hope of a good time because of the delays they encountered. Results were:—
