R. N. Weir won the Canterbury Chess Club’s 1961 intermediate grade championship. after being judged the winner of an adjourned game with C. W. Taylor. Weir scored nine points out of a possible 10. RMitchell was second with eight points. Other placings were: N. M. Cooper. 7| points. 3: C- W. Taylor. 6. 4; C. P. Collins and Miss A. Welland-King. each equal
S. The perpetual handicap winner for August was C. A. A. Smy*h <lBl points on). The annual Moore Cwp limited opening championship will be played at Labour week-end. This year, games will be played at the rate of 30 moves an hour, instead of five-minute games as last year. The 1960 winner, G. V. Sumner, who is also this year’* club champion, will be a warm favourite for the tournament.
