Fine Guineas Win By Castlerae
"The Press” Special Service
WELLINGTON. Oct. 1. Castlerae proved himself a colt of good class when he won the Hawke’s Bay Guineas on Saturday under extreme difficulties. He knuckled over and dipped badly when he jumped out of the stalls at the start A slight collision with Kawera caused his rider, C. A. Bowry, to lose both irons and about six lengths. By the time Bowry recovered his irons and his balance the field was speeding on its way. It required the first halfmile before Castlerae closed on his six opponents and he was still last but one turning for home. However, he was galloping freely and after joining the leaders near the last furlong took clear charge and comfortably won from Big Mac by a length. Castlerae ran the mile in Imin 39 4-ssec, which was a first-class gallop on a dead track. Top Rank, the second favourite, dropped out of the contest in the straight after sharing the lead from the six furlongs. He was found to be suffering from a bruised heel. Castlerae has now won the last three of his four starts as a three-year-old. His previous wins were in the Wanganui Guineas and the Members’ Handicap on the first day of the Hawke’s Bay meeting. He will race next at the Wellington spring meeting, where he is engaged in open sprints and the Wellington Guineas. His owner, Mr G. S. Walton, replying after the presentation of the Guineas ribbon on Saturday, said he appreciated the generous ovation the public had given Castlerae for winning under difficulties. “He is a good colt but I have a better one at home," said Mr Walton. He was referring to Commanding, which was withdrawn from the Guineas at Hastings and left today by road for Auckland to be prepared for the Great Northern Guineas. Collided At Start Castlerae and Kawera collided when they left the stalls for the start of the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, Castlebrae losing six lengths and Kawera four. Stella Alpina was first away from Top Rank, Sikh. Silver Pelt, and Big Mac with gaps to Kawera and Castlerae. Top Rank joined Stella Alpina at the six furlongs and at the three furlongs Sikh went up to Top Rank and Stella Alpina dropped back. At this stage Castlerae was still last, but they had closed up the gaps. As they turned into the straight Sikh and Top Rank were abreast in front just ahead of Big Mac. Silver Pelt, Kawera, Castlerae and Stella Alpine. Castlerae effortlessly moved up to head the leaders at the last furlong and he carried on to win impressively by a length from Big Mac. Silver Pelt was three lengths away third, half a length in front of Sikh (fourth). Kawerau was fifth and Top Rank, eased up when beaten at the last furlong, was 12 lengths away sixth. There was another gap to Stella Alpina, which was last. There was a fair attendance for the second and final day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's spring meeting. The track was In good order, with the weather overcast and cold. The totallsator handled £54,423 10s a decrease of £2323 10s For the meeting the total was £105.543 10s. a decrease of £1572 10s.
