Sections

Three sections of the Canterbury badminton championships Were in progress at the V. R. Skcllerup Badminton Hall last night. The finals of each grade will be played tomorrow night. In an A grade semi-final. D Reid, a left-hander, narrowly beat the veteran. J. Read, in three sets. Reid raced away to a 6-0 lead in the third set. and his opponent was lacking in touch at this stage. After a grim battle. Read crept up to 11-12. but Reid, forcing the play, won the game without dropping any further service. R. Macefield won easily in the other semifinal. Perhaps the most thrilling game was one of the men's B grade semi-finals. T. Hameiss won in straight sets, but the match could easily have carried on into the third set. Results were:— A Grade Men’s Singles.—Semi-finals: R. Macefield beat B, Wylie, 15-5. 15-2: D. Reid beat J. Read. 15-17, 15-7, 15-11. B Grade Men’s Singles—Quarter-finals: E. Ogier beat N. Greenslade. 15-5. 15-11; M. Berkley beat W. Jenner 18-13, 17-14; R MiHer beat M. Finch, 15-6. 15-4; T. Hameiss beat R. Fleming. 15-4. 15-5. Semi-finals: Harneiss beat Miller 18-17, 15,5. Mens Doubles—Quarter-finals: Elmey and Moss beat Tenner and Serra, 15-8. 16-5; Berkley and Boloski beat Hickey and Lonw, ,15-4 18-15. Women’s Doubles—Semi-finals: Misses V. Tucker and J. Saunders beat Miss M. Potts and Mrs C. Newton, 15-4, 15-5; Mesdames S. Naysmlth and E. Walker beat Misses M. Shanahan and Crombie, 15-13, 15-6.

Mixed Doubles.—Semi-final: D. Ford and Miss M. Inglis beat E. Ogier and Mrs Saunders, 15-4, 15-7.

Junior Girls’ Singles.—Quarter-final: A. Moss beat S. Dench, 7-11. 11-3, 11-5. Semi-finals: N. Williams beat A. Moss. 11-4, 11-6: R. Waites beat L. Ashley. 6-11, 11-3, 11-6. Mixed Doubles—Quarter-finals: Paton and Miss Stephens beat Wakeham and Miss Moss, 7-15, 15-10, 15-5, Semi-finals: P. Boatwood and Miss Ashley beat Paton and Miss Stephens, 15-9. 15-7; R. Miller and Miss Waites beat R. Serra and Miss Williams, 18-13, 15-9. Boys’ Singles.—First round: N. Oliver beat K. Ragg, 15-12, 15-4; R. Marsh beat J. Smith, 15-6, 15-7.
