MAORI FOUNDATION’S FUND NOW £222,970

WELLINGTON, Sept. 21.
The Maori Education Foundation Bill was put through the committee stages in the House of Representatives today. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash) asked whether the unclaimed money, amounting to £32,000, which is to go to the foundation, could be subsidised. The Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Hanan) said he would “have a look at” the suggestion.
Jrfr Hanan said £22.970 had been received or assured for the fouhdation. It was made up as follows: Government grant £125.000 unclaimed money £32.000 Maori Trustee £lO.OOO, Maori Purposes Fund Board £6OOO private donations (all capitalised) £24.985. £ for £
subsidy on private donations £24.985.
Included in the private donations were £l5OO from 1.C.l (New Zealand), Ltd., £5OO a year from the Te Arawa Trust Board, £3OO a year from W. D. and H. O Wills. £2OO from the Aotea branch of the Maori Women’s Welfare League, Hastings, and £lOO from the Methodist Home Mission Department.
There are 58 life members and four annual members of the foundation.
