HARBOURS CONTROL

Local Bodies’ New Role (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Sept. 21. Small local bodies may be granted control of harbours under the Harbours Amendment Bill introduced in the House of Representatives today. To enable some control to be exercised in small harbours or lakes op rivers where a harbour board is not warranted, control may be granted to a local authority. The bill also increases the maximum honoraria which may be paid to harbour board chairmen.

At Auckland and Wellington the maximum is increased from £5OO to £750 and at Lyttelton and Otago from £4OO to £6OO. At Gisborne. Greymouth, Marlborough. Napier. Nelson. Southland. Taranaki, Tauranga. Timaru, Wanganui and Whangarei the increase is from £3OO to £450. Elsewhere the sum remains at £3OO.

The bill simplifies procedure for leasing mud-flats vested in the Crown for reclamation for farming which will, in future, 'be dealt with by the Land Settlement Board.
