Surcharge On Overdrafts

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 21.

Two questions on the overdraft surcharge were asked in Parliament this afternoon by Mr P. Blanchfield (Opposition. Westland). He asked the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) whether, “tn view of the Christchurch Drainage Board’s action in seeking from the Bank of New Zealand, relief on the overdraft surcharge, and in the light of the Minister's estimate that banks will reap an extra £750.000 a year on overdrafts” he would say whether this was a temporary measure covering the life of the present Government and whether the Government would still direct its bank to operate the surcharge on annual average levels of overdrafts rather than the annua] peak levels.
