HOMES FOR AGED
Site For New Scheme
Council-owned land on the corner of Retreat road and Avonside drive wag chosen by the City Council last evening as the site for • new scheme of housing accommodation for elderly persons not eligible for pensioners’ cottages. The housing committee
recommended that the land should be made available after the required area for street widening in Avonside drive had been provided. "During discussions of the scheme at the July meeting of the council, some councillors said they were not happy with the idea of life tenants paying the full price of the cottage as, through death, occupancy would perhaps be for a very short period,” the committee said. “In this event, it would appear that the council would be making profits from the project. “The committee wishes to emphasise that any profits from the scheme would be utilised to provide additional accommodation on similar lines. It is also emphasised that the cost of the project would not be a charge on the general rate.” The scheme adopted by the council is for persons who can affqrd to meet the cost of a cottage and who would have life tenancy, the cottages being resold on the death of the occupants. Similar schemes operate in -Australia.
