TEACHERS OF DEAF
Special Course Offered To increase the number of teachers of deaf children, the Education Department has announced a special acheme of training to be offered at the Christchurch Teachers’ College next year. No quota of trainees has been fixed. Trained teachers in general subjects, preferably with two years or more classroom experience, are sought They will be specially instructed at the Christchurch Teachers’ College for the first two terms but will be paid directly by the department and attached nominally as supernumerary staff to one of the schools for the deaf.
On the completion of the course, those qualifying will be employed at either the Kelston (Auckland) or Sumner (Christchurch) Schools for the Deaf. They will later be able to seek promotion in these schools or join the itinerant diagnostic and guidance services attached to these schools.
Trainees will receive their normal salary and up to £7B a year for single persons and up to £4 a week for married persons if they have to live away from home to Qualify. If married trainees elect to shift .their hotnes to the training centre, modified ramoval expenses will be allowed and further assistance may be given when they take up their first permanent appointments as specialists.
