N.Z. Maintaining Share Of Fiji’s Imports

New Zealand is maintaining its share of Fiji's imports although its main competitors, Britain and Australia, did not retain their percentages of trade in 1959. the New Zealand Trade Commissioner for the Pacific (Mb K. W. Davies) says in a report in “Export News,” the newsletter of the Industries and Commerce Department.

“Although the 1960 trade report is not available, the preliminary figures are sufficiently encouraging to suggest that it will not be long before New Zealand takes a larger share of the market.

“The result indicates the greater interest displayed by New Zealand exporters in meeting the needs of the market which is at their front door.” says Mr Davies. “Imports into Fiji from. New Zealand during 1960 show increases. in frozen mutton, milk powder and condensed milk and beer. When the final trade figures are published, important increases are also expected for potatoes, fresh and frozen vegetables, metal manufactures and electrical equipment “The continued interest m the Fijian market shown by the New Zealand Government, together with the increasing activities of New Zealand nwiufacturers, is creating a respect for New Zealand's commercial enterprise. Previously there has been some criticism of the lack of attention given by New Zealand to this market. Rugs and Blankets “There is an opening for New Zealand rugs and blankets. Though the market is not large, there may be business to be gained

through sales to the tourist trade.

“Sales opportunities for New Zealand Douglas fir and pinus radiata have improved. “Some importers were interested in Chinese goose, berries which are already being exported to Britain. Hawaii, and the United States, and I am confident that a market will now develop in Fiji,” Mr Davies says.
