ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Cattle Prices Lower; Big Sheep Sale

Fat cattle prices sagged again at the Addington market yesterday. On top of last week’s decline of 40s to 60s a head steers and heifers of all classes lost another 40s a head, and cows, which eased last week by 30s to 40s, were from par to a shade easier. This further decline occurred in spite of only a moderate-sized selection. Once again over-fat cattle were hard to dispose of at low rates. Store cattle values were no better. Though there were more fat hoggets forward there were fewer top sheep, and values for good hoggets held up surprisingly well, with plainer sorts back about 2s to 3s. Spring lambs sold soundly with a slight gain. A heavy fat sheep offering resulted in generally lower values for ewes by several shillings, but good quality young wethers did not show much change. Store sheep values were similar to last week, except that inferior quality ewes and lambs may have been a little slacker. The over-all entry of store sheep showed a further rise. STORE SHEEP last week. Quality was abc

Store sheep values fairly closely followed last week’s improved market. Inferior quality ewes and lambs could, however, have been a little cheaper than last week. The offering was again a little larger at 3138 head, compared with 2666 last week, and included 1090 hoggets (1037 last week), 1864 ewes and lambs (1319 last sale) and 184 ewes (12). Among the hoggets in particular quality was very mixed. Hogget values held at about last week’s rates. Best Romney or Romney cross ewe hoggets in the wool ranged from 60s to 68s, with average to good at 46s to 50s. and woolly Corriedale ewe hoggets of good quality ranged from 61s to 71s. Border Leicester cross hoggets sold to 75s 6d with R. Warman (Weedons) topping the sale. An undisclosed Hawarden vendor realised 71s for 80 woolly Corriedale ewe hoggets while Romney cross sold to 68s for the tops of a line of 146 from L. Morris (Norwood). Romney cross ewe hoggets shorn a month from E. T. Smith (Broadfields) fetched Ms 6d for 66.

In the wether hogget section fine wool shorn sheep predominated with the better class selling from 40s to 47 s 6d and others from 29s to 375. G. H. Inch (Te Pirita) had 34 shorn halfbreds at 47s 6d. Woolly sheep realised up to 53s for 20 early shorn from E. A. Mangin (Meth ven). Details of sales are:— National Mortgage and Agency Company. Ltd., and H. Matson and Company, sold: on account of L. Morriss (Norwood), 148 Romney cross ewe hoggets at 62s to 68s. Dalgety and Company, Ltd., sold: on account of R. S. Bassett (Burnt Hill). 79 Romney ewe hoggets at 50s; client, 44 shorn halfbred wether hoggets at 425; R. J. Doak (Karaka Downs), 70 Border Leicester Corriedale cross ewe hoggets at 575. New Zealand Farmers Co-op-erative Association. Ltd., sold: on account of G. Inch (Oxford), 56 shorn halfbred wether hoggets at 29s to 36s 6d, G. H. Inch (Te Pirita). 34 shorn halfbred wether hoggets at 47 s 6d. Pyne, Gould. Guinness Ltd., sold: on account of Hawarden client, 113 Corriedale ewe hoggets at 61s to 71s; W. Nell (Rakaia Gorge). 70 halfbred ewe hoggets at 46s to 60s; J. E. Bardry (Prebbleton), 24 Southdown cross hoggets at 565; R Warman (Weedons), 31 Border Leicester cross ewe hoggets at 75s 6d; S. A. Murray (Domett), 40 shorn Corriedale wether hoggets at 40s. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., sold: on account of E. T. Smith (Broadfl elds), 66 ewe hoggets at 54s 6d; P. A. Copland (Annat), 28 wether hoggets at 435; E. A. Mangin (Methven), 20 wether hoggets at 535; North Canterbury client ,56 wether hoggets at 33s 6d.

Ewes and lambs made up the greater part of the adult sheep offering and once again there was a good showing of forward condition lambs. For the best of the selection the market looked to be holding to late rates, but for inferior quality sales were not so easy to make and the market tended to be easier.

The best of the offering made from 29s to 32s all counted, with average to good at 26s to 28s and others at 15s to 235. Details of sales follow:

New Zealand Farmers’ Cooperative Association, Ltd., sold: on account of C. Warren (Prebbleton), 43 Romney ewes and 74 Down cross lambs at 325; J. Gillies (Cashmere), 24 ewes and 26 lambs at 23s 6d; Rangiora client, 144 Corriedale ewes and 144 lambs at 19s 6d to 21s 6d.

New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., sold: on account of J. A. Val’ance (Sefton), 53 ewes and 61 lambs at 325: H. E. Fantham (Sheffield), 158 ewes and 186 lambs at 15s to 255. Pyne. Gould, Guinness Ltd., sold: on account of J*. Barclay (Prebbleton), 26 ewes and 27 lambs at 255, 31 one-shear Corriedale ewes at 595. Dalgety and Company, Ltd., sold: on account of client 150 Corriedale ewes and 185 Down cross lambs at 28s to 30s.

National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., and H. Matson and Company, sold: on account of G. H. Heywood and Son (Springston), 35 Corriedale ewes

with 36 Down cross lambs at 295; R. G. Rainey (Woodend). 35 Corriedale ewes with 42 Down cross lambs at 28s. SPRING LAMBS The spring lamb entry was again smaller—with 39 head being offered, compared with 54

last week. Quality was about the same. The sale opened on a firm note with values dearer by a shilling or two and held this level.

T. W. Tyson (Springston) topped the sale with a pen at 70s and his line of 15 made from 65s Id. T. H. Burgin (Swannanoa) had a sale at 67s Id.

Best spring lambs realised from 65s Id to 70s Id, with average to good at 55s Id to 60s Id and light from 50s Id. Sales included:— New Zealand Farmers’ Coop. Association Ltd., sold: on account of L. C. Warren (Prebbleton). 1 at 51s Id; J. F. Smith (Broadfield) 4 at 57s Id.

Pyne. Gould, Guinness Ltdsold: on account of T. H. Burgin (Swannanoa), 11 at 58s Id to 67s Id; Wilson Bros. (Halkett), 8 at 57s Id to 66s Id; T. W. Tyson (Springston), 15 at 65s id to 70s. Id. FAT HOGGETS

Although there was a bigger fat hogget entry of 1964 head, compared with 1325 last week, values did not show any marked decline. Quality generally was not as good with a much smaller number of big heavy hoggets forward and more average quality medium-weights in the offering. With good competition from the trade the prime heavyweight shorn and woolly hoggets held practically firm on last week’s advanced rates and the best of the medium-weight sheep also showed little change. Light to medium classes and bigger sheep that were not fully prime were cheaper by 2s to 3s a head in a surprisingly sound market for this type. The market was topped b,y Pankhurst Bros. (Sandy Knolls) with 16 at 96s Id, nine at 95s Id and 16 at 94s Id. H. Dunlea (Ashburton) sold a line of 50 at 91s .Id to 96s Id. with eight at the higher figure, and P. H. Letham (Ashburton) received 94s Id for 10.

Among particularly good sales of shorn hoggets, J. Jamison (Aylesbury) sold 14 at 78s Id and had sales also at 74s Id and 73s Id. T. W. Callender (Lincoln) had a sale at 76s Id. Values were:— Best woolly hoggets, 90s Id to 98s Id.

FAT SHEEP Fat sheep numbers showed a marked rise to 4262 head, compared with the 2796 penned last week. The bulk of these, however, were ewes, and there was probably a Wether yarding of about normal size.

Good quality young wethen held to last week's values and there was a good demand from the trade. There were not many older wethers and these, too, appeared to sell well. Ewes opened 3s to 4s a head below last week’s higher rates and as the sale progressed there was a further weakening, particularly in the closing stages when demand had slackened and there was little competition. Overall, the general range of values for butchers' ewes would be back by 5s to 8s a head on woolly lines and by up to 5s a head on shorn sheep. Top price of 91s Id for wethers was gained by D. Deans and Son (Darfleld) with nine, and G. A. Logan (Rakaia,) sold three at 90s Id. E. W. Eagle (Rakaia) received 87s Id for a pen, and L. G. Skurr (Oxford) had a sale at 86s Id. For shorn wethers E. G. Bird (Pendarves) received 79s Id for 18 and a similar number from J. Dick (Blenheim) realised 78s Id. The latter vendor also sold 14 at 77s Id. 14 at 76s Id, and 13 at 75s Id.

Woolly ewes made up to 61s Id, which was paid for the top pen from W. Kerr (Mitcham). L. P. Manion (Weedons) sold a pen at 59s Id, and sales at 58s Id were made by G. J. Francis (Halswell). T. and L. Allen (KUUnctiy) and W. R. Chambers (West Melton), Among good sales of shorn ewes, O. T. Watson (Annat) and H. J. Hamilton (Omihi) both sold pens at 37s Id. * Values were:— Best heavy young woolly wethers, 34s Id to 91s Id.
