UNIONIST’S CLAIM

“Move Against Labour” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. The Government wanted to break up the local Labour Party by stopping work on Maraetai No. 2 power station because Mangakino workers had always been ”a thorn in the flesh of the National Govment,” Mr S. P. Hart, a union secretary alleged at Mangakino last night He was speaking at a meeting called to protest against stopping work on the dam. Nearly 500 workers affected by the Government’s decision attended the meeting, which lasted two hours and a quarter. The workers decided to send Mr Hart and a union vice-president (Mr W. D. Bell) to Wellington next week to lodge strong protests with the Minister of Electricity (Mr Goosman). The two representatives want these questions answered: Where and when will redundant Maraetai workers be employed? What is the position regarding housing? What alternative jobs can be offered? Who is going to pay for any transfers which may be necessary?
