DAIRYING MERGER

Bill Before House (NX. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 25. The butterfat price of 32d per lb for this season was “a very good one," said the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Hayman) in the House of Representatives. He was moving the second reading of the Dairy Production and Marketing Board Bill. The bill’s main provision is the merger of the Dairy Board and the Dairy Products Marketing Commission into a new body—the Dairy Production and Marketing Board. The new board will have 13 members. The bill also deals with dairy price fixing and dairy accounts and establishes a Dairy Products Prices Authority, The Deputy-Leader of the Opposition (Mr Skinner) said most of the principles in the bill were agreed to by the previous Government during negotiations with the dairy industry over the last two years. He said he would like to see the letters exchanged between the Government and the dairy industry included in the schedules to the bill. “But. generally speaking, we agree with the bill,” he said. Mr T. P. Paikea (Opposition, Northern Maori): Will it produce more butter? Mr Hayman: It will produce more and it will sell and in more widely spread markets all over the world. Those responsible are doing a wonderful job in difficult circumstances and they will continue to do so in the future, and it will probably improve as a result of the new set up.
