HEATER STARTS FIRE

Little Damage Done Heat from an oil-burning heater caused slight damage to a wall of a room on the second floor of the Whitcombe and Tombs building in Hereford street at 8.46 a m yesterday. Three units from the Central Station answered the call, but the fire was put out by fire extinguishers in the building. A wall of a lunchroom hut at the Ministry of Works plant at Blenheim road was set alight by heat from an iron chimney. One unit from the Sockbum station put out the fire when t answered a call at 10.30 a.m. A lighted cigarette which fell on to a mattress in a hut at 271 Bealey avenue about 6.50 a.m. started a fire which burnt the floor and a wall of the hut. An engine from the St. Albans station attended the fire. Tremor at Whakatane.— A fairly heavy earthquake shook Whakatane about 2.24 p.m. today. Preceded by a pronounced rumble, the jolt set lamps and open doors swinging. No damage was immediately apparent.— (PA.)
