WOOLLEN GOODS
New Duty In Australia (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, May 26 An emergency duty will be put into operation today on imported woollen piecegoods to check unemployment in the Australian woollen and worsted textile industry. This action follows a report by a deputy chairman of the Tariff Board (Mr V. A. Clark) that about half of the 23,000 employees in the industry were estimated to have been dismissed or placed on short time by the end of last month.
In his report, Mr Clark said the industry had submitted that imports of wool cloth were increasing to an alarming extent in certain lines, and that orders placed on local mills had either ceased or been drastically reduced.
New Zealand’s exports of woollen piecegoods to Australia are not listed in trade statistics, but are said to be negligible.
