PHILATELIC CONGRESS
Display In City Next August
A philatelic congress, in conjunction with the 1981 New Zealand national philatelic exhibition, will be held in Christchurch in August. The exhibition will begin on August 21 and will end on August 26. The congress will be held on August 23. The congress has been organised by Mr R. J. G. Collins. Six speakers will read papers. They are Mr G. Chamberlain (Wellington), Mr A. A. Orton (Dunedin), Mr D. G. Naish (Wellington), Dr. J. W. Avery (Darfield), Mr K. J. McNaught, and Mr C. H. Bliss (Whangarei). On August 22, the Rhodes philatelic room at the Canterbury Museum will be opened; on August 25, there will be a meeting of the Federation of New Zealand Philatelic Societies, and the jubilee dinner of the Christchurch society will be held on August 26. An exhibit of interest at the exhibition will be the American Philatelic Society’s international goodwill travelling collection. This collection, a non-com-petitive exhibit, comprises 100 pages, each in an acetate cover and showing the collecting tastes of the average American philatelist.
Fifteen gold medals, 20 silver medals, and 30 bronze medals, all specially designed. will be awarded at the exhibition. Four special awards will also be made. They are the American Philatelic Society’s award of distinction, which may be awarded as the jury decides; the George Bolt award, presented by the Air Mail Society and Auckland branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society, which will be awarded in the aerophilately section; the American Topical Association’s special certificate award for the winners of first place in each class of the topical collections section; and the special prize given by the Antarctic Circle, Masonic Club No. 1 for the Antarctic section.
