Sixth-Form Education
Sir, —Mr McCombs stated yesterday that sixth-form standards in English and New Zealand schools are comparable. This statement is misleading and needs clariflca--1 tion. One can equate New Zealand upper sixth with United Kingdom lower sixth. New Zealand University stage I with United Kingdom upper sixth and post-stage I with the United Kingdom thirdyear sixth which is provided in many of the better schools. About three-quarters of United Kingdom sixth-form time is spent on the three main examination subjects while the other quarter is devoted to two or more subsidiary subjects chosen to give a broader and more stimulating education.’ It should be added that the brighter English children offer eight, nine or 10 subjects at the School Certificate level, thus specialising a year later than their New Zealand counterparts—a policy worth adopting here. If our prosperity is to continue, our educationists must not become complacent.— Yours, etc., ANOTHER EDUCATIONIST. May 18. 1961.
