The Economy
Sir, —Instead of trying to pinpoint inflation it would be more efficacious if we attacked it with a sledge-ham. mer. Unfortunately, Professor A. J. Danks is an ardent; supporter of free enterprise; and I would not think he! would be very enthusiastic! about this mode of attacking] an insidious blight on our] monetary system. Neverthe-! less. Mr J. G. Barclay is to] be highly commended for hisi acute observations on our! losses on butter shipped toj Britain. He could have mentioned the information in a; box on page 6 of Saturday’s issue which said the naughty] Communists are receiving 2s 5d a pound for rabbit flesh while tender New Zealand lamb rates only about Is 8d in the opinion of British housewives. Inflation is a serious subject. When in Germany, in 1919, I witnessed inflation looting that country peacefully while the popula. tion of unoccupied Germany starved.—Yours, etc., RALPH S. WHEELER. Ttmaru, May 17, 1961.
