Bus Shelter Needed
Sir, —As a Riccarton ratepayer 1 wish to say that it is high time that a shelter and a bridge over the gutter were provided for the passengers embarking on the Wharenui bus at Dalgety's corner in the Square. In wet weather the present arrangement is rather primitive. Protests to the board. I am told, met with a deaf ear when the Creyke road bus was given our base in front of the United Service Hotel. —Yours, etc.. NO UMBRELLA May 14. 1961
I The general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) replies: “The request for covering in the channel is not understood because for some time now road improvements .have been made to this corner 'of the Square, and there is now no wide uncovered channel indicated in the letter. A new kerb has been put on this corner of the Square with a flat channel, which enables the bus to draw up to the pavement, and there is no w'ide open gutter to negotiate In regard to shelters, there has [been no specific request for 'a shelter at this point, but !in any case the question of the provision of Square furniture and amenities is at the present time to be the subject of a competition controlled by the City Council, which carries a prize given by Mr Mac Gibbon for the competition winners, tn the circumstances, it will be [necessary to await the result of this competition before any further consideration can be made in tills connexion.”]
