Clothing Quality

Sir, —I served my apprenticeship as a tailor and have worked in the clothing in. dustry for 48 years. I have handled and closely examined most types of garments from overseas countries. I repeat: garments made in New Zealand clothing factories compare more than favourably with those anywhere in the world. A small proportion of New Zealand-made garments are not as good as they should be but New Zealand manufacturers are not alone in that regard. I have seen imported garments of extremely poor workmanship. We enjoy a very high standard of living in New Zealand. Your correspondent enjoys these advantages but objects to paying the price Imported clothing from any country with comparable living standards is definitely more expensive to buy in our retail stores than a similar garment made in New Zealand, the only exception being garments which are purchased at end-of-season clearing prices. I have worn New Zealand footwear ail my life and have found it to be extremely goodwearing, reasonable in price, and in every way just as good as the few imported shoes I have used.—Yours, etc., C. H. STOCKBRIDGE. May 18, 1961.
