Vaccination Reduces Deaths
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, May 17. The poliomyelitis vaccination campaign in New South Wales has reduced <>aths from 134, in 1951, to two last year, the Director of State Health Services. Dr. E. S. A. Meyers, said today. “From reports overseas, our results appear to have been the best in the world,’’ he said. Dr. Meyers said that 90 per cent, of school children and 80 to 85 per cent, of preschool children had been vaccinated; but only a "disappointing” 45 per cent, of adults also were protected. He said that in 1951, there were 1528 cases and 134 deaths. In 1956. when the vaccination campaign began, there were 214 cases and 56 deaths.
