TAXES IN KENYA
Increase For Europeans
(N .Z.P.A.- ft euter— Coming fit) NAIROBI, May 17. The European personal tax in Kenya, at present £7 lite a year, will be increased to £lO under budget proposals put before the Legislative Council yesterday. The personal tax for Africans will be reduced from £1 to 15s. The finance minister, Mr Kenneth Mackenzie, said petrol and kerosene would go up 2jd a gallon and spirits would cost 2s a bottle more. Ke said Kenya would have been faced with a deficit in the current financial year of more than £4m. Some of this will be met by a grant in aid from the British Government but the balance could be met only by further economies or by taxation. The total British aid during the financial year would be about £2om, he said. Meanwhile Tanganyika plans to spend £24m on development in the next three years, according to Associated Press. The money will come in grants and aid totalling £7m from Britain and cither sources.
