Fewer Than Last Year

(N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 3. There was a substantial reduction in deaths of drivers and passengers in motor-vehicles in April, a sharp drop in night-time fatalities, and a falling-off in week-end road deaths. Twenty-six persons died in road accidents during April, compared with 40 in April last year. Road deaths in the first four months of this year total 120, compared with 126 to the end of April, 1960. Releasing these figures today, the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) said there were some encouraging trends in the April accident analysis. 50 per cent. Reduction “Deaths of drivers and passengers in motor vehicles during the month showed a more than 50 per cent, reduction on April last year—l2 compared with 26.” he said. “Road deaths at night were only half the April, 1960, toll, while week-end deaths dropped from 25 during April last year to 11 last month,” he said. “The number of road deaths during April is the lowest for this month for the last four years,” said Mr McAlpine. “But pedestrian and cyclist deaths comprised half the April fatalities.”
