Motor-Cycling Two Deaths In West German Motor Races

NUERBURGRING (West Germany), April 30. The British speedway star, Dickie Dale—-who had earlier won a race —was one of two men fatally injured in crashes which marred the Eifel international motorcycle races today. Reuters reported. The other was Alfred Wohlgemuth, of Stuttgart. He was riding as a passenger of the world sidecar champion, Helmuth Fath, who was severely injured in a crash in one of the sidecar events. Dale suffered a fractured skull and leg fractures. He was rushed to a local hospital, but doctors called for a helicopter to take him to Bonn for emergency treatment His wife was with him when he died soon after.
Dale had long been a leading figure on motor-cycle circuits in Britain and on the Continent. Before his crash he had won the 360 c.c. event at an average speed of 72.41 miles an hour.
He was leading in the 500 c.c. race when he crashed in the southern bend of the track twisting through a wooded, hilly area.
In Sicily, the Belgian motor driving ace, Oliver Gendebien, was injured in a road accident near Palermo only a few hours after winning the gruelling Targo Florio road race, said Associated Press. .
