ECONOMIC COUNCIL
Support From Mr Nash (N.2. Preu Auociotion) WELLINGTON, April 27. “I think any inquiry by competent persons into factors associated with finance, economics, and production is particularly valuable, and the right to publish their thoughts and findings is more valuable still.” said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash), commenting on the announcement by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) of the establishment of the three-man Economic and Monetary Council to advise the Government. “We can’t have too many people anxious to find out the facts with regard to employment and unemployment and the improvements in our living standards in accord with our productivity,” he said. Establishment Legislation would be introduced in the coming session of Parliament to establish the council, said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) at his press conference this evening. The Government had wished the council to press ahead with its tasks and had established it under the general provisions that the Government had, so that it could function before a bill was introduced. he said. In answer to a question about the salaries being paid to the members, Mr Holyoake said that they were being paid on a daily basis, but that could be considered when legislation was introduced.
