CRICKET ST. PATRICK’S WIN FROM ST. BEDE’S

There was much of the excitement of the first test match between the West Indies and Australia yesterday in the final stages of the game between St. Bede’s College and St. Patrick's College. Silverstream. Requiring two runs for the tie and three for the win with only five minutes of play left, the last St. Bede’s batsman came to the crease. Off the third ball he faced he was almost bowled, but the runs were scored and St. Patrick s won the game by one wicket.

Resuming its second innings of 21 for one wicket, St. Bede’s scored 150 before it was out. At one stage St. Bedes was eight for 115. but because of a good partnership between B. D. Clark and D. W. Nevin, the score advanced to 147 before the ninth wicket fell. Clark s innings of 58 was attractive to watch and his off-driving was excellent. The opposition bowling was steady rather than dangerous. P. Barnao and P. Lander both took four wickets. Barnao was the more hostile of the two with his sw r ing. Given approximately 170 minutes to score 120 runs. St. Patrick’s at no stage looked sure of reaching its objective. The first wicket fell at two, four were down for 37. and seven for 98. D. Courtnev batted lustily and effectively for top score of 43. Without his batting the visiting side might not have won the game. C. Wagg (19) and P. Barnao (18) provided some solidity in the middle order when the team was in danger of a collapse.

B. Dodson was extremely economic and deserved his four wickets, and M. Somers, although he took only one* for 53. gave a good account of himself. The St. Bede’s fielding was good. The running out of G. Bowker after A J. Rudkin had thrown a lovely return from the boundary, was most impressive. Scores: — ST. BEDE’S First innings - - 104
