CAR OVER BANK

Army Officer Injured

The chief of staff of the Southern Military District (Lieutenant-Colonel R. A Tinker) escaped from serious injury last evening when the car he was driving failed to take a bend, crashed through some trees and landed in a back garden 50 to 60 feet below the Clifton terrace road level at Sumner. Colonel Tinker was taken by St. John ambulance to Christchurch Public Hospital and admitted suffering from a head injury. His condition late last evening was satisfactory. The car, an army vehicle, was not badly damaged. According to the police, had the trees not been there to break the fall, the result could have been very serious. “If the car had travelled another few yards down the terrace and gone over the bank it would have ended up fair and square in the middle of a house. Colonel Tinker, who lives at 56 Clifton terrace, was travelling towards Sumner. The accident occurred about 7.15 p.m.
