GRAPES NOT FOUND
Kaiapoi Theft
Neither the grapes nor the culprit who took them from a Kaiapoi glasshouse last Friday night have been found. Notification that the 30 or so bunches had been treated with a poisonous spray was given over the radio after discovery of the theft by the owner of the property, Mr W. B. B, Syder, on Saturday. Fears that if eaten in sufficient quantity the grapes could prove fatal were expressed by both Mr Syder and the police. The Medical Officer of Health (Dr. L. F. Jepson) said that malathion, with which the grapes had been treated, was “not one of the most dangerous sprays by a long way” .but that the police warning was justified in that people could get into trouble with malathion if they did not know how to deal with it. Malathion was poisonous when first applied, but weathering and dampness changed the chemicals so that it became harmless after a week or so.
