Complaint On Post Office
Criticism ot the Post Office’s issue of yellow pages of a classified business directory was expessed by a member in a letter to last evening’s meeting of the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. The council decided to ask the member for more specific objections.
"Private enterprise produces quite good business directories and manages to classify a manufacturer under all necessary headings at no charge,” wrote the member. “They apparently make a margin from the advertisements and the sale of the directories. I feel it is an imposition on the part of the Post Office to allow one only free entry and to make a charge of £2 per annum for each extra entry “His company manufactured a variety of lines and possibly other manufacturers were similarly placed. “Could the appropriate committee of the council gfve a little thought to this question? It appears to me that if the Government desires to enter this field, it should be on similar terms to those who produce directories privately. Or, should we look upon the telephone business directory as something intended for shops and tradesmen, and not for business and manufacturing?” Mr W. H. Price said there should be a limit to headings under which any manufacturer should go. “This seems to be a crack as the ‘pink pages,’” said Mr D W Thomas. The maximum amount of information should be in the classified section, said the president (Mr J. K Dobson).
Train Delayed.—The Limited express from Wellington to Auckland yesterday arrived three hours 52 minutes late, after an engine failure between Tangiwai and Karioi. The express arrived at Auckland at 1.7 p.m. A relief engine was sent from Ohakune to finish the journey.— (P.A.)
