GROUNDS FOR RUGBY
Allegations By N.Z.F.A. (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 20. The New Zealand Rugby Union was making arrangements with local bodies under which certain sports grounds were to be kept exclusively for Rugby, it was alleged .at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Football Association at the weekend.
The president (Mr R. A. Keeling) suggested the matter should be taken up with the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz). Mr W. Hawthorn (Whangarei) reported a local case where, he said, the Rugby Union had given £5OOO for a stadium, had lent the local borough council £20.000 at low interest rates, and the council was finding £60,000. He said the agreement specified the ground would be for the use of Rugby only. “It means the Rugby Union is getting a stadium for only £5000,” he said. It was wrong for ratepayers’ money to be used for only one sport and the local Football Association was contesting the arrangement, Mr Hawthorn said.
Another delegate said he believed a similar arrangement was being made in North Otago.
