SOUTHLAND COWS
The 21 black and white cows of A. and R. Udy, of Menzies Ferry. Southland, recorded the best average ever recorded by any herd of more than 20 cows in the country in the 1959-60 testing season. Their average was 14,5011 b of milk and 6011 b of fat with 4.1 per cent, test in 297 days.
With all but three heifers in the herd producing more than 5001 b of fat and including in its ranks five two-year-olds, four three-year-olds and cows up to nine years of age, this herd has achieved success with about the average composition, on an age basis, of a typical New Zealand dairy unit.
With her return of 23.9401 b of milk, an average yield of 781 b daily throughout her lactation, Riversley Domino Ida, V.H.C.. established a new New Zealand record for all breeds for milk production under a 305-day test, while her butterfat yield of 9291 b of fat was not only the highest of all cows tested in the South Island in 1959-60 but also a record return for all-time under a similar test for any cow, irrespective of age or breed, ever tested in the island.
Top performer of a trio of first calvers was Lelburne D. P. Molly with 5511 b of fat. Before its performance last season the Lelburne stud had averages of more than 5001 b of fat to its credit over six consecutive seasons.
