Staggered Holidays
Sir, —There should be a change in the holiday system in this country. Last week I asked in stores for three articles. Each time I was told, “We have had it, but owing to the holidays the factories have not yet caught up on stocks.” Christmas and New Year arc a puzzle to visitors to this land. Some of the rubbish made and sold is a waste of labour in a country that is so far behind in many ways. Too much overtime is worked because factories close for three weeks at Christmas time. Labour ruined this little land after the first war. Men had to seek the pension, and give up work. It should have been shoulder to the wheel first.— Yours, etc FROM OVERSEAS. February 9, 1961.
