(N.Z. Press Association—C(ypvrtght) SYDNEY. January 2. Gemstone, a 5 to 4 favourite, won today's TattersalU Cup at Randwick by half a head, after a thrilling finish. Royal Pomp (15/1) was second. with Macdougal <ll/4) a length and a half away third. The finish had the crowd shouting as the first two horses went to the post stride for stride for almost half a furlong. The Neu- Zealand gelding Oakland, finished full of running to win the New Year's Gift from Capworth and No Regrets. Oakland was ridden a confident race by Athol Mulley and won by three-quarters of a length. A length and a naif separated second and third. Oakland has started three times for two wins and a third. The New* Zealand-bred Aladdin's Lamp (5 to 1) maintained his consistent form when he won the Encourage Handicap. He is raced in partnership by the golfers Norman von Nida. Peter Thomson and Kel Nagle. The gelding has had three wins and a second from his last four starts. Today. Aladdin’s Lamp, ridden by Neville Sellwood, finished strongly to beat Le Tigre (10/1) by threequarters of a length.
