SALESMAN FOR TRIAL

Manslaughter Charge (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON N„ Dec. 9. Charged with manslaughter, Peter Maurice Bailey, a salesman, aged 21, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, when depositions were taken before Mr D. G. Sinclair, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North today. The charge arose from an incident at Koputaroa, near Levin, on or about October 23. when Gordon Charles Heayns. a shepherd on the McGill estate at Koputaroa. was killed by a gunshot wound.

Evidence was given that Heayns, Bailey and two other youths, Colin Richard McGill and James David Roberts, who were all staying at the McGill estate, split into pairs to go oppossum shooting on the night of October 23. Bailey allegedly fired a shot which hit Heayns in the chest, killing him.
