University Examination Results
Sir, —The Olympian reticence of the university administration concerning examination procedure appears to be causing irreparable damage to goodwill. Could the vice-chancellor not give an explanation full enough to show students and the public that some of the delay here, in relation to other centres, is caused by invaluable procedures for reconsidering borderline cases, which students would certainly not wish to forgo if they knew about them? The trouble this year appears to be that the registry, for reasons not yet clear, has decided to hold back some results for the sake of publishing everything together. It has also allowed an apparently very long time to do this after receiving the results from the staff. As the staff has now received much public criticism, could the vicechancellor not exonerate them entirely? In large departments, particularly, the staff works exceedingly hard to complete results as soon as possible.—Yours, etc., GRADUATE. December 6, 1960. [The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) comments: "At the various examiners' meetings which follow the initial marking of scripts by individual examiners. the most careful consideration is given to the performance of all students, including ‘borderline cases.’ The examining staff has worked exceedingly hard to complete results as soon as possible; the registry staff is working equally hard to ensure that each of the 13,000 -examination results returned by the examiners’ meetings is correctly published at the earliest possible date.”]
