Advice To Teachers
Sir, —Of all the poppycock written on present education, the letter today by ‘‘High Pressure” attributing tensions in primary teachers to the system of inspection surely takes the palm. The trouble today is that inspectors just don’t inspect. Teachers are “professional people,” so the inspectors are “advisers” and “colleagues” in the common aim. They must give notice of their visits to schools. Hence one I know where the staff spent a week-end window-dressing. Only trouble was that the telephone message was received in error. If the inspectors could see the wrong spelling and arithmetic marked correct in my children’s books they would quickly see why young people can’t spell or figure. It is parents who have Mr Archer’s tensions.—Yours, etc., RASPBERRIES. December 9, 1960.
