Passengers On Bicycles

Sir, —“Road Safety” is a pertinent pseudynom for a correspondent who is. moved to protest against the foolhardiness of one person transporting another on a machine which was never intended to take an unbalanced load. If the roadworthiness of bicycles is now a matter for official inspection, surely the rideworthy capacities of their owners might bear a similar scrutiny? As a prudent motorist I always leave ample room for both bicycle and cargo to capsize out of reach of my wheels when rheeting or overtaking one of these unwieldy tandem outfits. Even so, an unpremeditated and involuntary lurch could cause a

disaster, and I think it would be in the interests of all road users if the practice were to be forbidden.—Yours, etc. BICYCLE MADE FOR ONE. December 9. 1960.
