Air Pollution
Sir, —In this morning’s issue is a paragraph on cancer and air pollution, giving the results of a New Zealand study by Dr. David Eastcott that offers evidence of a connexion between air pollution and respiratory cancer. This shows the present contrast between British migrants and native-born New Zealanders, and demonstrates the need for us to maintain this standard in our metropolitan areas to see that air pollution is not allowed to menace our people. This gives particular point to the objections of the residents of the Hillsborough district of Opawa against the proposal of the City Council to permit the introduction of an offensive trade in the processing of gypsum in this closely-occupied residential area. Residents know from the ‘operation of other industries that fumes and dust will constitute a danger to their families and homes. Where is the town-planning authority that is expected to preserve the wellbeing of city dwellers and the amenities of the ‘‘City Beautiful”?—Yours, etc., KEEP NEW ZEALAND CLEAN. December 8, 1960.
