“THE GLASS MENAGERIE”

Phoenix Theatre Production

The theatrical year in Christchurch has not been particularly eventful; but at least it is ending with one or two memorable productions, among which must be included the Phoenix Theatre version of Tennesse Williams’s play “The Glass Menagerie.” The producer, John Batstone, has undoubtedly had his difficulties with staging, and these tended to be perceptible at the beginning of the performance. However, the play is so well produced and acted that the final effect smoothed away all recollection of these moments of awkwardness.

Maysie Collins showed considerable understanding in working up the part of Amanda Wingfield, living in her memories and daydreams of life in the old South. In particular, the dreadful unreality with which she regarded every aspect of her children’s life was cleverly and continuously suggested. A great deal depended of Douglas Nottage’s comments as the narrator; and here it need only be said that he was in full control of the feelings of the audience. This was noticeable in the final scenes, which seemed much more moving for that reason. The pathological shyness of Laura Wingfield makes the part a difficult one even for an accomplished professional actress, and Shona Macdonald is. to be commanded for the standard she maintained. She did particularly well in her scene with “the gentleman caller,” the dashing Jim O’Conner. This role was taken by Eric Woods, who brought out the superficialities and the depths of rather surprising character. “The Glass Menagerie” is playing at Begg’s Theatre until November 26. No-one who is interested in good amateur acting should miss it. —C.E.S.
