PROPHECIES BY ECONOMISTS
“Gloomy” Attitude
Attacked
“I tend to lose my patience with our prophesying economists who see only a gloomy future for New Zealand.” said Mr W. A Bascand. immediate past president of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation, at a social function last evening to introduce Carnival Week in Christchurch. Economist difficulties ahead had been forecasted by Professor B P Philpott, of Canterbury Agricultural College.
“The future is not something to be forecast—the future is something to be earned,” said Mr Bascand. A cry of a leader in a time of crisis was: “Give us the tools and we will do the iob.” said Mr Bascand.
“If Government will give industry the opportunity to buy the tools, industry will meet the exigencies of the future.”
Throughout the world, the growth of technological development was almost explosive. The future was yeasty in its possibilities, said Mr Bascand
