COX PLATE ON SATURDAY
Williamson To Ride Howsie (N.Z. Press Association— Copyright) MELBOURNE; October 18. The New Zealand galloper Howsie brilliantly won the 10 furlongs barrier trial at Caulfield today and immediately after the trial the local jockey W. Williamson asked for the W. S. Cox Plate ride on Saturday. Williamson will not ride Howsie in thf Melbourne Cup—he is booked for Ilumquh. The trainer R. G. Chapman said today that Nilarco would start in the Cox Plate. Webster will not start in the Oox Plate. His next run will be in the Werribee Cup tomorrow week. He was scratched from the Melbourne Cup yesterday. The Sydney Cup winner On Line will run in the Cox Plate and Bernie Howlett will be his jockey. The Sydney stayer Valerius will have only one start—in ths Cox Plate at Moonee Valley—before the Melbourne Cup. Valerius is now equal fourth favourite for the Melbourne Cup. He slipped from second favouritism at the week-end. The trainee Frank Dalton is keeping to the same training tactics which won the Brisbane Cup for Valerius last season.
