Athletics TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY

Marist (M’s Celebrations The Marist Antatattr Athletic ■nd Harrier Club, which has produced some distinguished athletes Spencer street will be run today and- .a. dance and social win be held .this evening. Tomorrow morning members will attend a religious service and for the remainder of the day a i picnic will bo held at the Yaldhurxt Domnin. Among -those expected to attend the celebrations win ‘ be some of the foundation members who inaugurated the club in 1935. Tlmm will indude Jim O’Brien, A. Hendren and possibly Pat Consedine. all of whom competed in the first TakaheAkaroa relay race in 1935. It was due largely to the untiring efforts of MY A. Hendren, who was secretary from 1935 to 1938, that the dub became firmly established. By 1939 it had gained in numbers and running strength. The leading runners at that time were A. M. O'Connell, who was the Canterbury junior champion, J. H. Goggins, D. Syons, D. Cartwright, p. Keenan and W. Kenny. After the outbreak of the Second World War, the dub went into recess and was reformed again in 1946. Jim Daly joined the dub in 1947 and began to show the outstanding ability which was later to make him the most successful runner in the club’s history. He won the club championship .in his first year and eventually became the New Zealand record holder for the one, two, and three miles. He also represented New Zealand at the Empire Games at Vancouver in 1954. In 1949 the Marist Amateur Athletic Club amalgamated with the Marist Harrier Club.
