Lampada Wins Somers Memorial At Te Aroha

(New Zealand Press Association)

TE AROHA, October 2. With the exception of Lampada, which won the Somers Memorial, and Dipnoi, which dead-heated for first place in the Waimata Handicap, the each-way favourites failed at the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s spring meeting on Saturday. Four of the winning horses Summer Mom. Fire Gold, Great Ven and Lord Filou, returned dividends of more than £2O. and this resulted in the on-course betting being below expectations. The main event and first leg of the T.AJB. double was the Somers Memorial Handicap, in which the favourite. Lampada, was a clear leader half-way down the straight, and he carried on to win by tout lengths from Whiteoks, which came from the rear to beat Uppercut and Insignus. The race was marred by a bad fall near the four furlong peg when Gold Myth and Shamus O’Brien came to grief. The riders of both horses escaped serious injuries. The second leg of the T.A-JB. double, the Electric Handicap, resul-

ted in the bracketed pair, Rosina Ann and Gold Ann filling the first two places ahead of Royal Crescent. The double dividend was £49 14s 6d for £1 Although the weather was fine for the first five races, heavy showers fell prior to the sixth event and the course, which was in good order early in the day. became soft and was cutting out. Investments on-course amounted to £77,898 10s, compared with £76,774 •5s for the corresponding meeting last year.
