BELLAROOK TOO GOOD IN WYNDHAM SPRINT

INVERCARGILL, October 2. A brilliant winning performance of the Callander three-year-old, Bellarook, which outclassed the open sprinters at his first attempt in the higher grade, was the outstanding feature of the Wyndham Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. Bellarook, which had won a double at the Grand National meeting at Riccarton, but failed in the John Grigg Stakes, won under a hold by five lengths in Imin 12 1-5 sec. He is entered fox the Wellington Guineas later in the month. Another Wellington Guineas candidate, Astra, returned to winning form in the Edendale Hack Handicap. He is now in open company. Matlock won the main event, the Spring Handicap, which resulted In a tight finish among the first four place-getters. The successful double—Matlock and Bellarook —returned £27 for £l. This was shared by 2017 5s ticket-holders. Wingatui stables had a good day for wins, with Matlock, Astra, Neron, Surapt, and Peak Effort. The meeting was held in fine weather, before a good attendance. The track was in fast order. The totalisator handled £22,449. compared with £21,393 last year, an increase of £1056. Matlock Gets Up There was a tight finish to the Spring Handicap, in which Matlock got up to beat Carbonett and Osman, which dead-heated for second, by a head. Mighty Son was a neck back, fourth. Barrister was fifth, a length away, then there were half lengths to Ravelston and The Era, which were well clear of Demolish. Matlock was always handily placed in a close-running field. There was little pace on over the first six furlongs. but the pressure was on over the last half mile, run in 48 4-ssec. Mighty Son reached the front at the end of a furlong and led Osman and Ravelston (pulling hard) at the mile. Demolish, The Era, Matlock. Barrister, and Carbonett raced in close order behind them. Mighty Son led Osman by a length at the half mile. Ravelston and Matlock shared the next line, ahead of Carbonett. then came Demolish. The Era. and Barrister. Osman joined Mighty Son in the lead at the top of the straight, where Ravelston, Matlock, Carbonett, and Barrister (wide out) were practically in line. In a fine finish, Matlock got up to shade Carbonett and Osman, with Mighty Son a close fourth. The Second Leg Bellarook. making nis first appearance in open company outclassed the opposition in the Flying Handicap. He was fifth at the half mile, but moved up smartly before the straight and had the measure of the pacemaker. Brianbra. early in the run home. He coasted home by five lengths, and won under a hold. Brianbra lasted for second, ahead of the fast-finishing Sabin. Liban was a close fourth, ahead of Kinsimm. Callevo, Ben Ledi, Cattiva, Black Star. Super Key, and Garrob.
