TRAFFIC DENSITY IN 1970
Forecast To S.LM.U.
More than a million vehicles would probably be using the roads by 1970, said Mr W. H. Brown, the private motorists’ representative on the National Roads Board, to the annual meeting of the South Island Motor Union yesterday. This posed a number of questions which concerned the motorist taxpayer, said Mr Brown.
Would the reading system be ready to cope with each year’s increase in traffic?
Would expenditure in certain districts be so accelerated that other districts would be penalised? , Would urban motorway construction slow up the Construction of rural motorways? Could the increasing demands from some county areas be met from current revenue? “Will we be able to meet these problems at the present level of reading taxation?” asked Mr Brown. * “Will an increase in tax for a limited period of years be justified to cover the preliminary special expenditure involved in new motorway schemes, both urban and rural?" “These questions surely give food for thought.” Mr Brown said. Election Of Officers Mr G. W. Ferens (Otago Automobile Association) was re-elected president of the South Island Motor Union at its annual meeting yesterday, and Mr E. C. Champion (Canterbury Automobile Association) vice-president. The executive committee declared elected was Messrs E. R. Casbolt (Canterbury), T. E. V. Turpin (Otago), C. H. Harvey (Southland), W.
