FINANCE FOR MOTORWAYS

Resolution By : S.LM.U.

Land purchase and compensation connected with the financing otf motorways was a problem which the National Roads Board would eventually have to face in Christchurch, said Mr W. H. Brown, private motorists’ representative on the board, speaking ait the South Island Motor Union’s annual meeting yesterday. It was a very real problem already confronting the board in Auckland, he said.

“Very large sums of money are required for this purpose,' once an urban motorway is established, and. it is only the start of extremely large expenditure to produce easy access and egress for fest-growing cities,” Mr Brown said.

After discussion, it was resolved “that the union considers the purchase of land for urban motorways be financed entirely from the Consolidated Fund, and directs that the joint standing committee Of .North and South Island unions prepare and present a case to the Minister of Works in support of this decision.”
