FIXING OF LEVIES ALTERED
Change In Union’s Rules
South Island Motor Union levies on member automobile associations will now be fixed in proportion to an association’s membership, instead of in proportion to its subscription to the union. This alteration to the union’s rules was passed at its' annual meeting yesterday. Levies may be fixed on member association’s subscriptoins as a means of obtaining any extra finance which the union may require from year to year. The alteration was opposed by the Canterbury delegates, but was declared carried on the voices when the motion was put.
Mr A. C. Perry (Canterbury) said that in view of the change in the basis of associations’ subscriptions to the union, passed on Thursday evening, the alteration in fixing levies did not matter—it was a logical conseouence to which there would be no objection. “But Canterbury is hopeful that in the clearer atmosphere of your own districts there will be a change of heart, a change of thought, a change of feeling—that you have used your powers unwisely and unfairly against Canterbury,” Mr Perry said to delegates.
“We hope that there may still be second thoughts about the matter and a change, motivated by yourselves, of the matter passed last night. “If that should come about—and we hope it will be soon—then it is better that the rule on fixing levies stands as at present,” said Mr Perry.
